STRATEGY & INSTITUTIONAL FLOW BRIEFING: OCTOBER RE-LOAD & EARNINGS TEST

THE TAKE: EARNINGS TEST VS. THE CORPORATE & RETAIL BUYING INFLECTION

Citadel Securities remains constructive on US equities entering Q4, though the market faces a crucial fundamental test as the Q3 reporting calendar accelerates. A pronounced divergence has emerged across growth assets: while stock prices and valuation multiples compressed sharply through late September/early October, forward earnings expectations surged higher.

The setup for Q4 features a powerful convergence of structural buyers:

  1. Corporate Repurchase Window Opening: Corporate blackout coverage drops from peak levels (24% open window today) to 55% by month-end, 75% by Midterm Election Day (Nov 3), and 85% by November 9, unlocking a record $1.3 Trillion in YTD Russell 3000 buyback authorizations ($573B in Tech alone).

  2. Retail Cash Allocation: Retail buying hit its highest weekly net accumulation in 15 weeks (+$9.1B net bought), driven by aggressive directional skew (2.7% better to buy, 90th percentile) concentrated in Semiconductors ($2.6B), AI Infrastructure ($2.4B), and Neoclouds ($700M).

  3. Equal-Weight Rotation: The S&P 500 Equal Weight / Nasdaq-100 ratio bounced off its lowest level since April 2000 (October 7 low), with equal-weight outperforming the NDX by +2.8% over a 3-session window (95th percentile move).

1. Q3 EARNINGS BAR, CONCENTRATION & VALUATION DECOUPLING

  • Pre-Season Consensus Expectations: Q3 consensus targets +27% YoY S&P 500 EPS growth—the third-highest pre-season expectation since 2010 (behind only pandemic recovery quarters). S&P 500 aggregate estimates rose +1.6% between July 1 and October 12 (5th consecutive quarter of pre-season upgrades).

  • Extreme Growth Concentration:

    • Micron (MU) and Nvidia (NVDA) alone drive 36% of total expected S&P 500 EPS growth.

    • The top 10 corporate contributors drive two-thirds (~67%) of total index growth.

    • Stripping out the top 10 contributors, S&P 500 EPS growth drops to ~11% YoY (and ~5% YoY for the smallest 300 constituents).

    • Despite top-heavy concentration, 74% of S&P 500 companies are projected to deliver positive YoY earnings growth (vs. 66% historical median).

  • Concentrated Earnings Calendar Window: 47% of total S&P 500 index weight and one-third of expected earnings growth reports in the 5 trading sessions between October 28 and November 3.

  • Valuation Multiple Compression vs. Estimate Upgrades (June 30 – October 12):

    • Memory: Forward 12M EPS estimates +25% | Forward P/E -34%.

    • AI Infrastructure: Forward 12M EPS estimates +25% | Forward P/E -22%.

    • S&P 500 Benchmark: Forward 12M EPS estimates +10% | Forward P/E -6%.

  • Corporate Guidance Ratio: S&P 500 constituent guidance shows ~3 upward revisions for every 1 cut over the past 4 quarters—the most supportive 4-quarter corporate guidance stretch in 20 years outside of major recession recoveries.

2. BREADTH RECOVERY & EQUAL-WEIGHT ROTATION

  • NDX vs. Equal-Weight Reversal: Following a 9% relative drawdown since mid-August that pushed the S&P 500 Equal Weight / NDX ratio to a 26-year low on October 7, equal-weight posted a +2.8% relative bounce (2nd percentile 5-year lookback).

  • Broad Participation Outperformance: Since the October 7 trough, 76% of S&P 500 constituents have outperformed the cap-weighted index, led by Defensives (+2.2% relative), Rate-Sensitives (+2.0%), and Cyclicals (+1.6%), while Technology trailed (only 42% of tech names outperformed).

  • 50-Day Moving Average Breadth: S&P 500 constituents trading above their 50-day moving average recovered from 25% to 37% (16th percentile 1-year lookback).

3. RETAIL CAPITAL FLOWS (EQUITIES & FIXED INCOME)

  • Retail Equity Acceleration: Retail net buying expanded over three consecutive weeks ($4.8B → $6.4B → $9.1B).

  • Retail Equities Concentration:

    • Semiconductors: +$2.6B net bought (96th percentile weekly reading). October is pacing at 3x its 1Y average, on track to be the largest monthly net buying session on record.

    • AI Infrastructure: +$2.4B net bought (94th percentile).

    • Neoclouds: +$700M net bought (record weekly accumulation).

  • Record Fixed-Income ETF Buying: Retail net bought ~$3.0B across fixed-income ETFs through the first 7 sessions of October ($422M/day, +28% above previous monthly record pace since 2017).Duration Split: Buying heavily favors T-bills/Ultra-Short Duration (2.3x 1Y average), Municipal Bonds (2.6x), and Treasuries (1.9x), while Corporate High Yield/Loans/CLOs lag at 0.4x.
